Shen’s Grandparents Fund was created in honor of my daughter, Shenika Nicole Wright who was tragically lost on Labor Weekend in an automobile accident. In her memory this fund will assist grandparents from within her lifelong community and across the globe. These grandparents like my self have found themselves parenting AGAIN due to life altering experiences such as death, substance abuse, permanent medical care or prevention of outside fostering.
My daughter like many of yours leaves behind 3 beautiful children : Timothy Brown age 10, Jimiya Jones age 6, and LeAnna Wright age 4.
“Not only did He stop us in our tracks, He also gave us a warning that life is real; it is no fairy tale. Do not take it for granted, and that we only have one life”.
-Patricia Hankins
SheN’S Grandparents Fund Community Development Foundation (SGFCDF), 501©3 organizations, developed for the role model, mentor, friend, Me maw, Big Mama, Yanni, and most of all for the “GRANDMA”. While formed out of tragedy, SheN’s was birth to help grandparents across the globe. In the country today and estimated 2,4 million grandparents face the job of raising their grandchildren. More than 67, 000 of those grandparents live in the state of Mississippi. For many, financial support is low to none and for most emotional support is zero. Between 2009 and 2016, the incidence of parental alcohol or other drug use as a contributing factor for children's out- of-home placement rose from 25.4 to 37.4 percent. When children cannot remain safely with their parents, placement with relatives is preferred over placement in foster care with nonrelatives because placement with relatives provides stability for children and helps them maintain family connections. The number of foster children placed with a grandparent or other relative increased from 24 percent in 2006 to 49 percent in 2019, according to data from the Department of Health and Human Services.
In 2019, our founder Patricia Hankins found herself “suddenly” like many, in the core of these unprecedent statics and through this SGFCDF was birth. Now, her goal is to help other grandparents with those hard to answer questions like “WHY and HOW am I going to do this” walk this journey with their heads up knowing that help is just a GRANDPARENT AWAY.
“God planted a seed in my heart even through my tragedy”.
-Patricia Hankins
We look at and ask God to show us our purpose in life. I asked, “Was this planned for my life to be taking care of and raising my grandchildren”? My grandson said to me, “Grana, you can take better care of us”. As a grandparent, it was my heart’s desire to step up to the plate and take care of my grandchildren. I am incredibly grateful for God blessing my family and I with these wonderful children.
God also made it possible for us to take care of them. Some families are unable to take care of their grandchildren, and it is heartbreaking for them. SheN’s Granparent Fund was created in honor of my daughter to help support the grandparents and children that have been left behind usually due to Death, Incarceration, Alcohol, Drugs, Homelessness, etc. Both the children and the grandparents need help.
SheN’s Grandparent Fund Community Foundation is seeking to enroll Grandparents who are doing the following (to tell your story): If you are taking care of your grandchildren because of any of the following
SheN’s Grandparent Fund Community Foundation (SGFCF) 501© 3 organization is working to create a network of grandparents that will serve as a hub of support, comfort, and encouragement one to another. This process will strengthen grandparents and give them the courage to continue in their journey of raising their grandchildren while never losing site on enjoying their lives as well.
SGFCDF, will assist many with the costs associated with raising their grandchildren through the utilization of donations of in-kind and financial seeds. This support is most needed because most grandparents have not financially prepared to raise their grandchildren and are on a fixed income.
“I want you to help others and to be a testimony, witness and a blessing to them”.
